It begins...

Next semester, our year is going to be broken up into different groups to start production on our different Flash animated short ideas. Yesterday, I thought it would be pretty cool if there was a Flash game that went along with the animated short I'm helping work on. Then I started thinking of what the game based on our short would be like and I thought: a side-scroller stage, a puzzle stage, another side-scroller stage, and then a boss fight. Then, in the haze and excitement of this idea, I thought, "Hey! I can make that!"

Ambitious? Most likely. But it'll be fun to try. The goal is to see if I can have something presentable by the end of next semester. Sure, it'll be filled with bugs and messy code but what program isn't?

I found this tutorial and did something you see above to get the ball rolling...Let's hope I can keep this up and have a somewhat presentable product by the end of next semester. *fingers crossed*

Welcome to Gotham

Final assignment of this semester.
A character with a background in any style we want.
I chose Batman: Animated Series.

This was fun. Even though I slept for about an hour so I can finsh it on time.

From the Woods to the City

Incomplete. Add this to the list of digital paintings I want to redo/finish. There so many things I wanted to do here but there was never any time. Throughout the whole semester I felt the deadlines were too soon and unreasonable. It always went down to me choosing between sleeping less hours or handing in incomplete digital paintings. Since I already sleep 4 hours a night on average, I rarely handed in digital paintings that were complete or satisfied with. I am fond with this concept but it was executed poorly.

I was on the right track (pun intended) but I didn't finish.

Wet and Fish-ish

Another assignment I want to have another go at...maybe...

I'm pretty okay with how I painted the guy but after learning about his terrible anatomy, I want to break and rebuild him.

Lip Bite

I really want to have another go at this. I feel I can do better.

The best part of this assignment was asking a few choice ladies to do some sexy lip bites for me.

The Room and The Process

A study on light and value. Needed more math to get everything right...

This is Bo.
He is a Gorilla-Bear hybrid.
From the only country where hybrids can be born.
He doesn't know anything about his biological parents but as a child was found and sheltered by "Mother", a human who is now one of the most feared criminal bosses thanks to the support and protection from Bo.

He has done many bad things, feels guilt and regret for these bad things but he does them because "Mother said so" and he believes whatever "Mother" says is the right thing to do.
In a world where futuristic technology has been discovered but still a long way of being understood, Bo has received his futuristic body armour from "Mother" as a gift and extra protection. He still doesn't know the full functionality of his armour. His main weapons are his (gorilla)bare hands or anything heavy that he can wield.

After a series of unfortunate events, he is separated from "Mother", winds up in the big city located in another country on the other side of the world where he learns he has been the bad guy and is on a journey to become good and find redemption.

This is my video game character concept done for school. Any comments/critiques/questions on the character would be cool.

Marlin Brando

The Process
  1. First I chose which fish I wanted to do. I decided to make up my own fish rather than paint up an existing one. I roughed out a 3/4 view, side view, and front view.
  2. Next, I drew a larger, a bit clearer pose of the fish. At this point, I had the idea of creating a fish the looks like it's holding it's breath. I thought it would be funny.
  3. When I was satisfied with the design and pose, I built up the form by paying attention the fish's light and shadows. I also experimented until I was able to get the tail look convincingly transparent. I realized too late that I moved away from the "Deep Breath" fish and it was pointed out to me that it started looking like Marlon Brando.
  4. Added stronger shadows and highlight, Worked more on the eyes and finished off the fins.
  5. Added the scales and gill, finished the eye, added textures, put in a background and adjusted the levels. DONE!

Shade/Lighting Test Fail

Tried a different shading/lighting technique. I had issues with how it was going about so I'll just scrap it and try again later.

Not Working Hard Enough

I have a bunch of ideas that I want to do but I keep getting sidetracked/distracted/lazy and it doesn't help that I spend way too much time on a single picture. The end of summer is creeping up quick.

Some of these are distractions that went too far.

Found an old sketch I did of myself. Practicing on that cel-shading colouring.
Still got a ways to go...

Another test...

Artbook Pages

My pages for the school artbook that will hopefully be made. I'm concerned I may have crammed in too much and some images might be too small. The only ones I think are at risk are the Jekyll/Hyde drawings but I'm not real fond of the lines in the first place.

Also! My artbook concept covers. The theme is "Animate Your World" so my idea was to have an animation disc above the earth like a magnifying glass. The image within the disc would've been an animation world and a bunch of random (non-copywritten) characters popping out and escaping through the disc. It was ambitious and I thought I had a chance of pulling it off but finishing up the work for the my personal pages took more time than I thought and I never got beyond these sketches. There's an extension but I've lost all heart for it for now and I have plans for other stuffs.

I was leaning more towards this composition but with the animation disc & Earth a little lower to make more space for the characters/cartoon stuff.

Creature skinned and de-bone'd

2 down, one to go...I really cheesed it with the colours on the one with the fur but it started losing a level of cuteness without the lines.

Sketching Downtown - May 2011

This summer on random days I'm aimlessly walking around downtown Toronto drawing random humans or whatever. Here's a few so far.
